What is SSEG registration, and do I actually need it?
SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Generation) registration is the process of formally registering a solar system with your local municipality — City Power in most of the suburbs CleanVolts serves. Any grid-tied system needs it, even a \"zero export\" setup that isn't feeding power back into the grid. CleanVolts handles the SSEG application as part of the Compliance Audit.
Why does municipal registration actually matter?
An unregistered system is a real risk, not a technicality: municipalities are enforcing this more actively, and non-compliance can mean fines, disconnection, or a hold-up when a property is sold or an insurance claim is lodged.
What do insurers now require for solar-related claims?
Increasingly, insurers ask for a valid Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and proof of municipal registration before honouring a claim that involves the solar installation or the DB board it connects to. Without those documents, a claim can be delayed or declined.
How long does a Compliance Audit take?
The on-site inspection — full visual check, thermal scan of every connection, earthing and isolator checks — typically takes a few hours. A written report with photos and a clear next-step quote follows shortly after.
What happens if my system fails the audit?
You get a specific remediation quote for whatever was found — a loose connection, missing earthing, the wrong breaker, incomplete labelling. There's no obligation to use CleanVolts for the fix, though our qualified partner electrician, C3 Maintenance Solutions, carries out the repair and issues the CoC once the work is approved.
What does a Compliance Audit cost?
R3,500–R6,000 depending on system size and complexity, quoted upfront before any work starts. No hidden fees.
Who actually does the electrical work?
C3 Maintenance Solutions, CleanVolts' qualified electrical partner, carries out any electrical remediation and issues the Certificate of Compliance.
Do you install new solar systems?
Not yet. CleanVolts is focused on auditing, fixing, registering and maintaining solar systems that are already installed. New installations are a future service, not a current one.
