A re-advance or further loan spreads the cost of solar over the rest of your bond term at your home loan rate, which is usually lower than a personal or solar loan rate. Over a long term, though, you pay more interest in total. Compare it with a solar loan and with rental, and check the bank's fees and approval times. *Last updated November 2026.* Most homeowners don't pay cash for solar. Using your home loan is one of the cheapest ways to [pay for solar monthly](https://cleanvolts.co.za/new-installations), but it isn't always the best. This guide explains the options and what to ask your bank. Spreading R120,000 over 15 years at a home loan rate can cost more in total interest than a five-year solar loan at a higher rate. The cheapest approach is often a re-advance with extra monthly payments, so you clear the solar portion in a few years while paying the lower rate. Run both scenarios with your bank.
