Renting gets you solar with nothing upfront and puts maintenance on the provider, but you pay more over time and usually never own the system. Rent-to-own sits in between. The right choice depends on your cash, your credit, how long you'll stay in the property and how much hassle you want. *Prices checked October 2026.* Solar costs far less than it did during the 2022 load-shedding rush, but a full home system with a battery is still a big purchase. That's why so many South Africans now rent instead. With electricity prices up about 9% again this year, more people are asking which way of paying works out best. This guide compares the four main routes, shows what to ask before signing any contract, and explains when each makes sense. ## What are the ways to pay for solar? | Route | Upfront | Who owns it | Who maintains it | Best for | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | **Buy with cash** | Full price | You, from day one | You | Owners staying put who have the savings | | **Finance** (bond, solar loan or personal loan) | Little or nothing | You, from day one | You | Owners with good credit who want to own without the lump sum | | **Rent / subscription** | Nothing or a small fee | The provider | The provider | People without capital, or who don't want to manage a system | | **Rent-to-own** | Nothing or a small fee | The provider, then you at the end of the term | Usually the provider during the term | People who want to own eventually but can't pay upfront | ## How much does renting solar cost? Home solar subscriptions from the best-known providers, including GoSolr, Wetility and Versofy, range from roughly R1,000 a month for a small entry system to over R4,000 a month for a large one. The fee usually includes installation, maintenance, monitoring and insurance, and most contracts increase it every year. Over a long period, that adds up. One independent comparison worked out that a mid-sized subscription averaging about R2,763 a month would cost around R331,000 over ten years before escalation, and roughly R381,000 with typical yearly increases. A comparable system bought outright costs a fraction of that, which is why buying usually wins over the full life of a system. Our guide to [what solar costs in 2026](https://cleanvolts.co.za/guides/what-solar-costs-2026) sets out current purchase prices. ## When does renting make more sense than buying? - **You don't have the capital** and can't, or don't want to, borrow it. - **You don't want to own a system.** When something breaks, it's the provider's problem. - **You may move within a few years** and the contract allows you to relocate or cancel on fair terms. - **Your credit profile rules out a good loan.** Some rental and rent-to-own providers apply lighter checks. ## When does financing make sense? If you own your home and have good credit, financing lets you own the system without paying for it all at once. Adding it to your home loan usually gets the lowest interest rate, but spreading a few years' worth of equipment over a 20-year bond means paying interest for far longer, unless you pay it off faster. Dedicated solar loans run over shorter terms. Many households find the monthly saving on their electricity bill covers most of the repayment. Whatever the route, compare the total cost over the full term, not just the monthly figure. ## What should I check before signing a rental or rent-to-own contract? 1. **The term** and what it costs to cancel early. 2. **The yearly increase:** a fixed percentage, linked to inflation, or linked to electricity prices? 3. **The buyout:** can you buy the system, when, and for how much? 4. **What happens if you sell the house:** can the buyer take over the contract, or must you move or remove the system? Yes. Businesses can rent, finance or buy as well, and some providers offer power purchase agreements where you pay only for the units the system produces. Owning carries an extra benefit for a business: the Section 12B tax deduction, which only goes to the owner of the system. You pay more over the long run than buying, but you get savings and backup power without capital or maintenance worries. It's the right answer for many households, as long as the contract terms are fair. Can I rent solar if I'm a tenant? Usually only with the landlord's written permission, because the system is fixed to the building. Some providers will only install for property owners. Can I add to a rented system later?
