# Upgrading from lead-acid to lithium: what to know before you swap

A lot of backup systems installed during load shedding used lead-acid batteries. They were cheaper, easy to get hold of, and good enough for getting through a few hours of darkness a couple of times a week.

The job has changed since then. With load shedding over, most owners want their system to [cut the electricity bill](https://cleanvolts.co.za/guides/what-solar-is-for-after-load-shedding), which means charging the battery from the sun every day and running the house from it every evening. That daily cycling is exactly what wears lead-acid batteries out fastest.

If your lead-acid bank is struggling, lithium is usually the answer. But it's rarely as simple as swapping one box for another.

## **Signs It's Time**

- The battery no longer lasts the evening, or runs down much faster than it used to
- The inverter shuts down on low battery even though it should have charge left
- The batteries are several years old and are now cycled every day
- Flooded batteries need topping up with water more and more often
- Any battery case looks swollen, cracked or is leaking

A swollen, cracked or leaking battery is a safety issue, not just a performance one. Don't touch it; get it looked at.

## **Why Lithium Suits Daily Use Better**

Most home lithium batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), a chemistry chosen for stability and long life. Compared with lead-acid, it has a few big advantages for daily cycling:

- **More usable capacity.** Lead-acid batteries last much longer if you only use about half their capacity. Lithium batteries can use most of theirs. So a lithium battery gives you noticeably more usable energy than a lead-acid one with the same rating.
- **A much longer life in daily use.** Lithium handles many more charge cycles before it loses significant capacity.
- **No maintenance.** No water to top up and no terminals to clean.
- **Lighter and smaller,** which makes it easier to mount somewhere suitable.
- **Better monitoring.** A lithium battery has a built-in battery management system (BMS) that protects the cells and reports its state accurately.

Lithium costs more up front. Over the life of a system cycled every day, it usually works out cheaper, because you replace it far less often. Our guide to [battery lifespan and replacement cost](https://cleanvolts.co.za/guides/battery-lifespan-replacement-cost) covers the numbers.

## **What Has to Change Besides the Battery**

This is where upgrades go wrong. Before buying a lithium battery, check all of these:

### **Your Inverter Has to Support It**

Not every inverter can work with lithium, especially older or budget models installed for backup only. The inverter needs to match the battery's voltage (for example 48 V), have charge settings suited to lithium, and ideally be able to talk to the battery's BMS.

That last point matters. When the inverter and battery communicate, the battery tells the inverter exactly how to charge and discharge it. Without that, the inverter is guessing, which can shorten the battery's life or cause unexpected shutdowns. Check the battery is on the inverter manufacturer's list of compatible batteries.

If your inverter isn't compatible, the upgrade may mean replacing the inverter too. Better to know that before you buy the battery.

### **The Charge Settings Have to Change**

Lead-acid and lithium need very different charging. Settings left over from a lead-acid battery can damage a lithium one. The inverter has to be reconfigured for the new battery as part of the installation.

### **The Cables and Protection May Need Upgrading**

A lithium battery can deliver a lot of current. The cables, fuses and DC breaker between the battery and the inverter must be rated for it. Wiring that was adequate for a small lead-acid bank may not be.

### **Don't Mix Old and New**

Lead-acid and lithium batteries shouldn't be connected together in the same battery bank. The upgrade means taking the lead-acid batteries out.

### **The Paperwork Needs Updating**

A battery is part of your electrical installation, so a change like this should be covered by a Certificate of Compliance. If the inverter is replaced too, the new one needs to be approved for grid connection if the system is registered with City Power. Our guides to [what a CoC does and doesn't mean](https://cleanvolts.co.za/guides/solar-certificate-of-compliance) and [SSEG registration](https://cleanvolts.co.za/guides/sseg-registration-johannesburg) explain both.

## **Where to Put It**

Lithium batteries don't give off gas the way flooded lead-acid batteries can, but they still have a temperature range they like. Somewhere cool, dry and ventilated, out of direct sun, is best. A battery that bakes in a hot garage all summer won't reach its rated life.

## **What to Do With the Old Batteries**

Lead-acid batteries are highly recyclable and shouldn't go in the bin. Battery dealers and scrap metal recyclers accept them, and they often still have some value.

## **Is It Worth It?**

If you only need backup now and then, and your lead-acid batteries are healthy, there's no rush. They'll cope with occasional use for a while yet.

If you want your system to cut your bill by cycling every day, lead-acid is the wrong tool for the job, and an upgrade usually pays for itself over time. The important thing is to cost the whole upgrade properly, including the inverter, wiring and paperwork, so the battery is only bought once.

## **Where We Fit In**

A Solar Health Check tells you how your batteries are doing, whether your inverter can work with lithium, and what a complete upgrade involves. If you go ahead, we specify the right battery for your system and supply components at cost.

A registered electrical contractor you contract directly does the installation and issues the CoC in their own name. We [scope it, coordinate it and check it's done](https://cleanvolts.co.za/remediation).

We work across Blairgowrie, Linden, Randburg, Ferndale, Northcliff, Fairland, Emmarentia, Greenside, Parkhurst and the suburbs around them.
