# Financing solar for farms in South Africa

**Short answer:** Farmers can pay for solar with cash, asset finance or a loan from their bank's agricultural division, development finance, a power purchase agreement (PPA) or rental. Compare the monthly cost of each against what the system saves on diesel and Eskom. Have 12 months of bills, fuel records and an installer's quote ready, because every lender will ask for them.

A farm solar system can pay for itself quickly, especially where it replaces diesel. Diesel went from about R19 to almost R32 a litre inland in the year to October 2026. But the upfront cost is large, and farming cash flow is seasonal, so how you pay matters as much as what you install. This guide compares the options and explains how to prepare for a lender. ## **How can a South African farmer pay for solar?**

## **Do banks finance farm solar?**

Yes. The major banks' agricultural divisions finance solar and other farm equipment, often as asset finance or as part of a wider facility. The Land Bank and other development finance institutions also lend to agriculture, and some offer finance aimed at renewable energy or at emerging farmers. Products and rates change, so ask your existing agricultural banker first. They already know your farm's cash flow.

Ask about repayment schedules that match your income. Some lenders allow seasonal or annual repayments, so you're not paying the most in the months your income is lowest.

## **What do lenders ask for?**

1. **Twelve months of Eskom or municipal bills**, showing the tariff and charges.
2. **Diesel records**: fuel bought and generator running hours.
3. **A detailed quote** from a registered installer, with every component named and the expected yearly production.
4. **A savings estimate** showing which charges and how much diesel the system will cut.
5. **Farm financial statements** and your usual credit information.
6. **Proof of ownership or a lease** covering the land or buildings where the system will go.

The savings estimate is where a weak proposal falls apart. It should be built from your own bills and diesel records, and show what solar can and can't cut on your tariff. ## **How do you compare finance against savings?**

Put the monthly finance cost next to the monthly saving. For illustration: a system that saves R15,000 a month in Eskom charges and diesel, financed at R12,000 a month, puts R3,000 a month in your pocket from day one, and the full R15,000 once the loan is paid off. A system whose repayments exceed its savings may still make sense for backup, but go in knowing it.

**Before you sign**
